Seal Oklahoma Students Clinic Provides Free Dental Care to Students

Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation recently partnered with the Oklahoma Dental Hygienists Association for a joint community service project called Seal Oklahoma Students (SOS), a clinic providing free dental sealants at Oklahoma elementary schools.

During the October clinic, 23 second grade students at Lawton Eisenhower Elementary received sealants — clear plastic coatings that protect permanent molars.

Typically, first molars come in around age seven. It is important to quickly seal children’s permanent molars after they become exposed and before tooth decay sets in. Sealants prevent food and bacteria from hiding in the permanent molars, which are hard to reach by brushing.

Children who do not regularly see a dentist may miss the most effective timing for sealants. The SOS clinic uses portable dental equipment to provide preventive services at schools and eliminate barriers to accessing vital oral health care.

“Our Seal Oklahoma Students (SOS) project provides free dental sealants and helps explain the importance of ongoing oral health care,” said Delta Dental of Oklahoma Foundation Director Terrisa Singleton. “When a child regularly visits a dentist, they are told when it is time for sealants. This clinic fills in the gaps for those who might miss that guidance and provides critical preventive care.”

Along with providing sealants, the SOS clinic educated students and their parents on dental hygiene. They were also referred to nearby dental offices for ongoing preventive care.
