OkMOM 2012 Being Held Feb. 3-4 in McAlester
The third annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy event will be held Feb. 3 and 4 at the SE Expo Center in McAlester, Okla. OkMOM is an annual two-day clinic designed to meet the critical needs of dental patients of all ages by providing free dental care to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it.
This year’s OkMOM, the first to be held in a rural area, is co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Oklahoma Dental Foundation, and the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation, which provided $100,000 in funding for the event. Additionally, 20 sponsors and businesses provided donations and discounts.
The clinic will be staffed by more than 1,500 general and dental professional volunteers and is expected to serve as many as 1,000 adults and children each day.
Prospective patients should download the OkMOM Patient Information Flyer for details. To volunteer, visit www.OkMOM.org.
2011 OkMOM a Big Success in OKC
The second annual Oklahoma Mission of Mercy, held February 4-5 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, was a tremendous success despite a February 1st blizzard that coated the state in ice and snow. Thanks to 1,400 dental professionals and other volunteers, the event provided free dental care to 2,201 Oklahomans in need, tying the national record for the most patients ever served at a Mission of Mercy. The total value of the 9,000 dental procedures donated is more than $1.1 million.
Organized by the Oklahoma Dental Association, OkMOM 2011 was funded by a $150,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation. The
Oklahoma Dental Foundation served as the fiscal sponsor and dozens of Oklahoma businesses donated products and services to make the event possible.
The next Oklahoma Mission of Mercy will be held February 3-4, 2012, in McAlester. For details, visit www.OkMOM.org.
2010 OkMOM - Tulsa
ODA & Delta Dental Partner for Largest Dental Event in State's History
At 5 a.m. on February 5th, 2010 there was a long line at Tulsa's Convention Center. It wasn't for a concert, conference, or school volleyball tournament – but for a much needed trip to the dentist.
More than 1,400 people lined up on day one of the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy (OkMOM) event. Organized by the Oklahoma Dental Association, OkMOM was funded by a $150,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Oklahoma Charitable Foundation.
“Our charitable foundation continually seeks ways to support dental professionals willing to provide their specialized talents. OkMOM was a perfect marriage of resources and ability and we are very grateful to the dentists, dental assistants and hygienists for donating their skills to such a great cause. Helping those with the greatest need of care was really a sight to behold,” said John Gladden, CEO and President of Delta Dental of Oklahoma.
OkMOM was staffed by more than 1,300 volunteers who worked long hours to deliver this vital care. The clinic was available on a first come, first serve basis for those in need of quality dental care they simply couldn't afford. Many arrived two days in advance and braved the cold to make sure they received help.
The clinic offered extractions, fillings, cleanings and root canals in addition to dental education and medical screenings. The goal was to treat 1,600 people on that Friday and Saturday. But with everyone pulling together, they actually treated 1805 patients and performed almost 7,000 procedures. Additionally, dozens of sponsoring businesses donated food, supplies and materials.
“OkMOM was a huge success and I'm proud that due to our not-for-profit status, the Delta Dental Foundation is able to realize its mission and fund these types of events that really change people's lives." said Gladden.
Future OkMOM events are planned for 2011 in Oklahoma City and 2012 in McAlester.
